GREAT BOOK ABOUT THE BREAST CANCER GENE
SEPTEMBER 2008
This month I would like to tell you about an inspirational and moving book that was published this year by Jessica Queller, who is my patient and friend. The title of the book is Pretty is What Changes: Impossible Choices, the Breast Cancer Gene, and How I Defied My Destiny.
The book is engaging and beautifully written; it is both a powerful, personal memoir and a fountain of information about genetically transmitted breast and ovarian cancer.
Jessica writes for television shows such as "The Gilmore Girls" and "Felicity". In her book, she describes a real odyssey. After watching her mother die a painful death, Jessica has herself tested for the breast cancer gene and is bewildered to learn that she has it. She overcomes grief and fear with grace and courage. How she makes impossible choices and defies her destiny makes for riveting reading. A gem.
